The study of customs and beliefs and the objects related to them have been part of the first exhibitions and holdings of the Ethnographic Museum since its founding in 1919. The Collection includes around seven thousand and six hundred objects related to annual and everyday customs and beliefs. Certain groups of objects are particularly represented in terms of number: Christmas decorations, objects related to beliefs and devotion, carnival masks, ritual breads and pastries, and objects made of straw. In 2014, the re-systematization of the museum collections separated the Collection of Christmas Nativity Scenes and the Collection of Easter Eggs from this collection. The group of Christmas decorations contains decorations for Christmas greenery and decorating the house during the holiday season, home-made decorations, and decorations of craft and industrial production. Objects related to carnivals, along with the most numerous face masks, also contain other equipment and props. Due to their poor durability, most ritual breads and pastries have been replaced by painted plaster casts, of which Christmas, Easter and wedding breads and pastries are the most common. Objects made of straw are mainly related to harvest festivals, but also to Christmas decorations. The group of objects related to beliefs contains a variety of objects, most numerous are holy icons, prayer books, rosaries, crucifixes, amulets, votive offerings and candles, blessed branches and the like. As the objects contained in the Collection of Objects Related to Customs and Beliefs are very diverse, so are the materials and techniques from which these objects are made (wood, metal, textile, straw, plaster, leather, wax, paper, glass, etc.). Most of the objects originate from the 20th century and are from Croatia. Only a small number come from Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, Hungary, Italy and Romania.
